  • Village hall renovations

Brampton Village Hall has recently had new windows installed and the Management Committee are asking if anyone would help us to make some curtains to complete the job. They will be quite simple – unlined and it would be good if we could find enough people to do one set each (1.e. 5 offers of help). If you are able to help please contact Fiona or this website.

  • Street Sweeping in Brampton

The Parish Council has been making a fuss about the condition of “The Street” and “Back Lane” and have asked that the roads be cleaned. We have just received their reply which is – : The Highways technician has inspected the roads in question and as “the wheel tracks” were clear they would not be sweeping them.

Residents are requested to individually complain to the Highways to build up a head of complaint steam. Their reply does not take into account the fact that the roads are also used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Nor does it take account of thee fact that vehicles still have to manoeuver through the slough in order to pass one another. To follow their argument logically they would never grit a road if wheel tracks are there to be seen.

UPDATE (28/11) -: We are advised that the farmer is about to start cropping the Sugar Beet. This will inevitably lead to more mud and disruption but agricultural necessity dictates that this is an unavoidable consequence of the harvest (and we all need sugar). The farmer in question had however stated that he will clean-up once the harvest has been collected. If the road becomes too bad please let us know.

  • Black and white cat with one eye – does it live with you?

There is a black and white cat with one eye that has been around the village for some time. It frequently visits ours where it steals food (but we don’t really mind) but it is exceptionally timid which makes me think that it may be feral. I know that it is sometimes seen at the other end of the village to us as well.

We have noticed that this cat has injured a paw / leg and is hobbling on the other 3. Is this cat yours, in which case please let me know and arrange for it to be treated.  If nobody claims the cat within the next 24 hours (by 14:30 on 31st October) I will take steps to catch it and have it removed to a sanctuary so it can be treated.

Any information about this animal would be gratefully appreciated.

  • URGENT : Weather Warning issued by Broadland 24/10/2013

Recent weather conditions have already been wet and windy – and this will continue on Friday and through the weekend. However, a vigorous developing area of Low pressure is currently forecast to move across the UK  as we head though late Sunday and into Monday.

Precise details of the path this area of Low pressure my take are uncertain – but there is the potential for some very strong winds to be associated with this system, which is currently forecast to move across southern parts of the UK on Monday. At the same time, there are still some uncertainties around the timing of when the strongest winds might affect our region.

The system is likely to lead to both heavy rain and very strong winds, with the strongest winds along the southern flank of the Low pressure centre. Wind speeds are expected to reach gale or severe gale force with gust speeds widely around 50 to 60 miles per hour but some locations, could see gusts in excess of 70 miles an hour. These wind strengths could be high enough to cause severe damage to trees, structural damage, a risk from flying debris and very difficult driving conditions.

Despite the uncertainties, the Met Office have issued a Yellow Alert for Wind across the East of England for Monday, with a Very Low Likelihood of High Impacts – and this Alerts also refers to the potential impacts from the rain.

Meanwhile, the risk of some locally heavy rain brings a medium risk of surface water flooding, so the latest FFC’s Flood Guidance Statement is Yellow for surface water flooding on Monday – which may be exacerbated by falling debris.

PLEASE NOTE THIS ALSO APPEARS ON THE VILLAGE FACEBOOK PAGE.

  • Village Resilience Plan

The Parish Council (Stuart Wilson) is working on a Resilience Plan for Brampton and Oxnead. This is what used to be called the Emergency Plan and ours will mesh with those of neighbouring villages which in turn feed in to District and County plans. At its simplest it is a risk assessment (we assess weather related events as the most likely to cause disruption) but also a communication tree, list of safe shelters in public and private buildings, volunteers prepared to assist with their 4×4’s, tractors or power tools and it also identifies those that are vulnerable within our community. Mostly it codifies common-sense. It also lists those with special skills such as builders, tree surgeons and medically trained people. Ideally we should also have a first responder (any volunteers?).

Are you prepared to assist by being in the communication tree or by making your specialist vehicles and equipment available to the community in emergencies that we earnestly hope never happen? Please contact Stuart or the Clerk on [email protected]

When complete the plan will be published on this website.
