• SNOW AND ICE – grit bins

It would appear that snow is in the forecast – something that we have had very little of in the last few years. Please remember that there are grit bins dotted around the Parish – if they run low please let us know.

  • Better Broadband for Brampton and Oxnead

We understand informally that the new superfast cabinet for Brampton and Oxnead is now working if you want to consider an upgrade. I am reliably informed that at least one supplier is claiming speeds of 74mb.

  • Village Hall events NOV / DEC 2016

An update on Village Hall events in the run up to Xmas. I apologise for the lateness of this again as I have not been 100% and I was waiting for some confirmations. The following events are planned –

    1. A brief informal meeting at 8pm on Friday 25th November in the Village Hall. This will be to discuss future plans and events including, possibly, a re-structuring of Club and Hall management. A few volunteers are required but the time-call is not great although you will be doing a service for your village. This meeting will be followed by –
    2. The opening of the Village Club and Bar from 8.30pm (or perhaps a little earlier) on FRIDAY 25th NOVEMBER. I am hoping that ADY will be running one of his “WIND-UP” nights at this opening with music like it used to be and convivial company.
    3. The VILLAGE CHILDREN’S XMAS PARTY from 4pm on DECEMBER 24th (Xmas Eve) to be organised by Geoff and Helen who will provide more details nearer the time but if you have children that may like to attend in your family please let them know (or via a reply to this email).
    4. Traditionally there is an adults VILLAGE XMAS PARTY on the evening following the children’s event. Children are welcome to this if accompanied and supervised. Normally this involves bring and share food and I have not heard that it won’t so please assume it will.

  • CLUB and HALL update – important.

    1. Contrary to a previously advertised date and time the VILLAGE CLUB / BAR will now be open at 8pm on FRIDAY 28th October. Apologies for the inconvenience. THIS IS A DATE CHANGE
    2. There will be a MEETING on November 25th in the Village Hall at 7.30pm to discuss the Hall and Club and on-going arrangements. Sounds dry doesn’t it? However it has to be done – ALL WELCOME (please). It wont be that dry as the bar and CLUB will be open afterwards (about 8pm) and I am hoping that it will be another Ady “wind-up” night that are always popular although it is not confirmed yet.
    3. The Village XMAS PARTY (normally children in the afternoon and then adults in the evening) is / was scheduled for December 17th but those that were going to organise it now cannot make it and have suggested December 24th as an alternate. What do you think or is there anyone willing to take over the organisation of the children’s party on the 17th December (the adults tend to organise themselves)?
    4. There is a new NOTICEBOARD for affixing to the front of the VILLAGE HALL but we are looking for a VOLUNTEER to fix it up for us – please let the clerk know if you can help on [email protected] or speak to me (Stuart).
FINALLY – Please remember that it is the season of fireworks and “trick or treating”. Please keep both activities safe and fun.
UPDATE THE TRICK OR TREATERS IN THE ORGANISED PARTY WILL BE AROUND ON SATURDAY NIGHT 29th OCT
  • WILLIAM SPINKS, son of Brampton 1929 – 2016 OBITUARY

WILLIAM SPINKS, son of Brampton 1929 – 2016 – may he Rest In Peace

WILLIAM SPINKS (known to some as Willy and others as Billy) was  born in the Old Maids Head pub in Brampton near where the village sign now is on 27th July 1929 and died in hospital on 14th September 2016 having lived in the same village yards from the place of his birth all his life.

His trade was as a Carpenter and was apprenticed at J.W. Palmer in Aylsham. He also worked for Norgate Brothers in Horstead. He finished his employed years with what became the Property Services Agency based at RAF Coltishall, a job that he retained from 1960 until 1992 when he retired. Although almost to the end he could often be seen working on this and that and keeping himself occupied.

He was married to Eileen in 1962 at Hellesdon as that was where she lived. Apart from his National Service William lived all his life in Brampton which is where their family was brought up and he developed a love for Village history which is shared and carried on by his son Jonathon.

William served on the Parish Council in Brampton (with a couple of short gaps) between the early 1950’s and 2013. I cannot confirm it exactly but this must be something of a record, especially locally.  He also spent 20 years fund raising for and building the Village Hall.

His National Service was served in the Royal Engineers where he mostly used his trade to good effect. Due to a national emergency (Eileen thinks Korea) his time was extended although he never served overseas, in fact, he did not got any further than Wales. It appears that a good part of the extended service was spent completing the Colonel’s conservatory.

The fact is that Brampton has lost a very special son who loved the village and gave much to it over the years. As we have seen he was a very long serving member of the Council with a special interest in the Village Hall that he devoted a lot of time to. His influence will remain for all to see for years to come, the Community Field which he also lobbied for and the Village Hall are two examples but by no means are they the only ones. Even well after leaving the Council and up to the end his thoughts were for the village. Even in the last months of his life he was lobbying for a new road sign on Marsham Road which was put in place whilst he was still with us and stands as a final testament.

There was a “can do” attitude to Willy that that those who knew him were privileged to witness often. The Council might discuss and debate little bits of damage and repairs needed here and there. Whilst we talked, Willy got his tools out and repaired the things the rest of us could only talk about.

William’s funeral will be held at 11:00 on 29/09/2016 at Brampton Church with a reception afterwards at the Diplomat pub, Badersfield. This is appropriately the last building he worked on when in public service when it was built as a centre for the service wives during the first Gulf War. Family flowers only please with donations in William’s name to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

  • Brampton Polling Station – threat of closure

Residents in “Brampton” will have received a letter today from Broadland District Council asking for their views about moving our polling station from Brampton to Buxton on the grounds of cost.

We believe that this is contrary to democracy and that people should be able to vote in ther own community. You simply cannot put a price on voting. YOU ARE URGED TO REPLY TO THE LETTER ON THE FORM PROVIDED REJECTING THE SUGGESTED MOVE.

  • BRAMPTON – the time travelling village

This sign has appeared in Brampton – the sign at the other end of the road is identical. For the record the dates should be 20/09/2016 until 03/10/2016 !!

  • Road Closure in Brampton

There is to be a road closure in Brampton starting on 20th September to do with BT works (possibly associated with the project to bring faster Broadband).
The following is a quote from the order – “NORFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL has made a Temporary Traffic Order affecting the U57099 Marsham Road from its junction with U57291 The Street to its junction with U57099 Oxnead Road in the PARISH OF BRAMPTON because of BT street cabinet, power installation, ducting and overhead cabling connection works.
The road will be temporarily closed (except for access) from 20th September 2016 to 3rd October 2016 for the duration of the works, expected to be about 14 days within the period”.
  • Chimney Sweep Day 2016

Geoff Ball has agreed to do another Brampton and Oxnead Chimney Sweep day (or days if the demand is great enough) this year. The way the day(s) work is that Geoff will dedicate his time to the village exclusively and get as much done in one go as he can.
The cost has been held over the last few years but Geoff has advised that it will have to rise this year to £40 a flue which is still a saving to each household. THE DATES WILL BE 20th September 2016 running over to the 21st if necessary. I will collate the calls for Geoff as a favour to the village. We try to accommodate times that suit but can’t definitely promise. If anybody will be out or away we can make arrangements to hold a key.
The offer is open to Brampton and Oxnead. Please let your neighbours know as I don’t have everybody’s email address and there are always people including some of our more mature neighbours that find this helpful.
Please let me know (by email if you know my address or via comments on here) if you want Geoff to call with a preference for date and time but there can be no promises on that although we normally manage to suit everybody. Details will also be posted on the Village Facebook page.
