• Power Cuts

This morning we had a power cut caused by a fire in a transformer. The cut affected a large area but we were back on a lot quicker than the initial estimate as the network switched things around. For reference in the event of a power cut information can be found by ringing 01243 508838 (select option 2). You actually speak to a helpful real person in a local call centre. If you are vulnerable for any reason you should tell them and they will take that in to account or, in extremis, make alternative arrangements for you.

  • URGENT : Weather Warning issued by Broadland 24/10/2013

Recent weather conditions have already been wet and windy – and this will continue on Friday and through the weekend. However, a vigorous developing area of Low pressure is currently forecast to move across the UK  as we head though late Sunday and into Monday.

Precise details of the path this area of Low pressure my take are uncertain – but there is the potential for some very strong winds to be associated with this system, which is currently forecast to move across southern parts of the UK on Monday. At the same time, there are still some uncertainties around the timing of when the strongest winds might affect our region.

The system is likely to lead to both heavy rain and very strong winds, with the strongest winds along the southern flank of the Low pressure centre. Wind speeds are expected to reach gale or severe gale force with gust speeds widely around 50 to 60 miles per hour but some locations, could see gusts in excess of 70 miles an hour. These wind strengths could be high enough to cause severe damage to trees, structural damage, a risk from flying debris and very difficult driving conditions.

Despite the uncertainties, the Met Office have issued a Yellow Alert for Wind across the East of England for Monday, with a Very Low Likelihood of High Impacts – and this Alerts also refers to the potential impacts from the rain.

Meanwhile, the risk of some locally heavy rain brings a medium risk of surface water flooding, so the latest FFC’s Flood Guidance Statement is Yellow for surface water flooding on Monday – which may be exacerbated by falling debris.

  • Parish Council Vacancy

There is a vacancy on Brampton and Oxnead Parish Council that can now be filled by co-option. We would welcome any applications but would particularly like to see interest from younger members of the community and also residents of Oxnead. Please contact the Clerk in the first instance on [email protected]

  • Postbox theft

You will see from the open letter post that the postbox has been stolen. It disappeared over the weekend of 6/7 July. If you have posted anything important in the box you need to take steps to report it and also stop any cheques etc. Thank you.

  • March Mermaid Kingfisher

This morning, as a gust from a cold easterly wind made us shudder into our coats, a high pitched exchange of notes rode the breeze upstream. The Mermaid was flowing over a riverbed which was seemingly devoid of life. But as we approached the calls became more frenetic and a pair of Kingfishers fled downstream before us. They continued their conversation, perched for a while on a suitable fence before whirring low and straight towards the Bure. Their colours almost shocking in comparison to the browns and greys of the meadows in March
